Couple

A little cartoon drawing of my husband and me, done at a drawing event in Long Beach called Ink & Draw.   I love to paint as you may already know but I love drawing cartoons as well.  My cartoons are inspired by my life.  So this is me and my husband as cartoon characters.  My husband is always wearing flip flops and his Hoonigan shirt and I have big poofy hair, though I could use some more practice drawing feet.

Lasik Eye funnies

Here is some comic I drew for fun.  I wear glasses.

I hate those Lasik Eye commercials, make it seem like you are a bumbling fool with glasses and blind if you lose them, oh yeah just get Lasik Eye and spend thousands of dollars!

“Do you hate waking up in the morning and falling off your bed because you can’t see?” “Do you hate bumping into people and having your glasses fall off and then cant see and fall into a sewer full of crocodiles, then Lasik Eye Surgery is for you!”

P.S. I like my glasses!

Road Trip

I’m back, well I got back last Tuesday.  I went to Texas/ Mexico to visit family for Thanksgiving week.  I went along in my brother’s car with my mom, sister and brother, We drove straight through for 24 hours to get there.  It was nuts, I haven’t done that in years and had forgotten how exhausting and leg cramping it is. But it’s worth it because you spend all that quality time with your family.  Nothing like being stuck in a car with your family to catch up on family happenings. I realized I took pictures but as not as much as I wanted to, a lot of them I took through Instagram stories.  If you don’t have Instagram, it’s just temporary photos that disappear after 24 hours.  I think I wasn’t clear with what photos I wanted to take and I wasn’t as ready with my camera.  The trip was a bit chaotic but I did get quite a few drawings and photo references for paintings I want to complete.  Not sure where to start but I’m thinking with a portrait of my grandma.  I have to finish a landscape painting I started back in March first.  I spent some time doing drawings and sketching people but not as much as I wanted to.  I also do pen drawings in my sketchbook but they don’t come out as clear when I take a photo of them but here is one of my pen drawings I did while in the car.

I think it’s a great sketch but the perspective got skewed, I elongated the legs too much.  Perspective is something I am thinking more of when I am drawing, especially with complex images.

I like to be weird with my photos, I like that dark face. Photos are a fun way to play with  environments which influences my paintings.

And here is me on the right with my siblings and sister-in-law in Mexico at Starbucks. I had to pay in Pesos, I hadn’t done that in a while.  One cup of tea is 40 pesos which is $3.

I didn’t get a pictures of my grandparents home but I hope to come back next year with a plein air easel and be able to paint their house.  That’s my goal.

My pet bunny Sam

DSCN8453

I did this drawing of my little pet that I had for such a short time, Sam was the only one I actually loved taking care of besides a dog my sister had for a short while too. We named her Sam and I learned all I could to do to take care of her. I let her roam around our apartment and she would follow us around after she finally warmed up to us. I caught her napping on our old Nintendo 64 when we were playing video games, it was so cute. My mom didn’t like my bunny, she has never been a big fan of pets but I was going to give her away, then she died for an unknown reason.  Me and my sister were real sad, we took care of her, fed her and mostly I changed her poopy area I kept her in.  It was very strange because she was usually very happy and running around and then she just passed away.  Well I was new to taking care of pets but there was no inclination of any issues with her.  But we remember her well.

I used an old reference photo, I thought doing crosshatching would be the best way to capture her fur and the texture of the rug. I’m loving it, I might frame this. Although the photo makes the pen lines so uniform in tone. 🐰 I’ll never forget my little bunny!

I used technical drawing pens for the drawing, it can be very a slow process doing small lines to do the whole drawing.  There is something soothing about the repetitive line marking.  It’s a technique I picked up from studying old metal plates drawings or historical pen drawings.  I’ll see if I can find some references but mostly I tend to scribble with my pens instead of doing traditional crosshatching.  I like to be loose with my pen work.  I have all pen weights from 0.05 to 0.8, though I tend to stay within 0.05 to 0.1, I love using the thick pens for shadows.  Mostly I was doing landscape drawings with the pens but my bunny portrait was a fun change.
